masterly master lee

a home for forgotten and famous korean pulp, its heroes, its heroines, and its pulpeteers

I’m A Cyborg, But That’s Okay 싸이보그지만 괜찮아 2006 review

cyborg.jpgNo, it’s not okay! It just isn’t. Master Lee had to have himself checked by a shrink after seeing this movie. Fully expecting another fabulously original, genre-defining, earth-shattering, gut-wrenching movie from director Park Chan Wook 박찬욱 (referred to by Master Lee in private as Master Park), instead he got this whatchamacallit movie that looks like a Park Chan Wook movie, but just isn’t. It’s about a girl who thinking she is a cyborg and gets committed to a aesthetically pleasing loony bin and meets a guy with a rabbit mask who thinks he can steal other people’s gifts. And it was thereabouts that Master Lee, writhing on the floor in agony and not understanding what evil force had convinced Master Park to step over to the dark side of arty-farty mumbo jumbo, gave up on the movie. Had They offered Master Park unlimited showings in prestigious European art houses? Had They promised him the same intellectually satisfying analyses Kim Ki-duk customarily receives? Or worse, had they turned Master Park into … Dr. Park? In a barely conscious daze he kept watching the screen, recognizing the familiar visual aesthetic mastery of his fellow Master, but the gi 氣 was somehow lacking. A wonderfully gift-wrapped package, but somebody forgot to put in the gift . Lights on but no-one’s home, as Master Lee’s other fellow Master (Master No) used to say. And it affects Master Lee! Master Park has not yet completed his crossing to the dark side where pulp is a term of abuse; the karmic brownie points he accumulated when he made JSA 공동경비구역, Sympathy For Mister Vengeance 복수는 나의 것, Old Boy 올드보이 and Sympathy For Lady Vengeance 친절한 금자씨 are too great for that. And rumor has it he is cooperating with that other masterly being, Master Bong (Bong Jun-ho 봉준호 of Memories Of Murder 살인의 추억 and The Host 괴물 fame) on a new sci-fi movie. Master Lee feels that if anyone can save Master Park it is Master Bong. Let’s hope he is right.
